Richard Braithwaite (b.1930) seen here in his mineral room, is one of the foremost mineral collectors of the past seventy or so years, known to many in the mineral world, both in academia and the collector community.
In many respects Richard might be viewed as the ideal ambassador for mineral collecting. Experienced in field collecting, widely travelled, technically expert, well-connected within the mineralogical community and with an easy-going personality and a somewhat mischievous streak, he has maintained good links with, and provided assistance to the collector community throughout his long life.
His extensive, worldwide collection, contains many rare species and specimens analysed and described by Richard and his great friends George Ryback (1936–2003) and Tim Greenland (b.1920).
This page provides access to view and download scanned copies of Richard’s extensive locality card index – a vital tool in planning his many collecting trips. As well as providing an extraordinary resource for present day collectors it also demonstrates the approach and research undertaken by diligent collectors in the pre-internet age. In a similar vein, I maintained a series of document wallets of notes and papers / offprints organised geographically which I worked through whenever I was planning an extended collecting trip.
The Russell Society records its grateful thanks to Richard for granting permission for his card index to be scanned, and to Tom Costes for undertaking the monumental task of scanning thousands of index cards.
The links below will take you to the folder location for each segment of the index from where you can view and download a PDF file which you can save to your local drive for future reference. Please note that some of the files are relatively large (around 300 MB) so will take a modest amount of time to download. On a good fibre broadband connection, you can expect the larger files to download in about 30 to 40 seconds, smaller files requisitely less.
